Ministry of Environment Position Paper

Minister: Victoria Kerr

Deputy: James Brenton

Environment is a word used to describe a habitat; a place to live. It also makes this country beautiful to begin with. It’s also what we humans take for granted a lot of the time.

There are three major topics that we need to focus on to help Canada be a better place and help the environment itself.

The first problem is greenhouse gas emissions. We need to find safe and effective ways of reducing theses greenhouse gases. They are rapidly increasing each year; and the longer we wait, the more damage will be done to the ozone layer, and ultimately, the earth itself. Ontario is already rapidly working on reducing these greenhouse gases by Going Green. When Ontario goes green, it basically reduces everything that greenhouse gases are emitted from. Ontario uses their vehicles less often and they do not use as much electricity, which slowly dwindles the greenhouse gases.

The second issue we need to focus our attention to is the preservation of natural resources. The country’s natural resources are quickly being destroyed and ruined by multiple forces, one being urban sprawl. Ontario’s natural resources are water, forests, minerals, and energy. Ontario is willing to cut back on our building (urban sprawl) in order to save our natural resources. Our natural resources are a major part in what keeps this country going.

Lastly, our final issue that we must turn our attention to is preserving the wildlife of Canada. The wildlife, much like the natural resources, is slowly becoming a minimal standpoint in a lot of provinces. The more we destroy the more wildlife we erase. It’s our duty to prevent extinction of species, not enforce it. Ontario is currently creating nature reserves to help save the wildlife from becoming extinct. One example is RARE in Cambridge; formerly Cruickston Charitable Research Reserve. They fence off a large space and keep it clean and make sure the wildlife survives properly.

The environment is something we should be proud of. We need to take care of it, just like we need to care for ourselves, our families, our pets. It is just as important.

Help the environment help you.
