Justice

The province of Ontario needs to focus more on youth in terms of justice. We support The Child and Family Services Statute Law Amendment Act. This act ensures that youth correctional facilities will stand alone aside from adult facilities in order to reduce the rate of repeat offences with youth. However, only children ages 12-15 are governed by this act while youth ages 16-17 are governed by the Ministry of Correctional Services Act at the time of an offence. We believe that youth ages 16-17 are still too young to be in the same facilities as adults. Youth are not mature enough to be in that kind of environment because they are easily influences. Also, that kind of environment is also very unsafe for youth. The stand alone youth facilities should be for youth ages 12-17 and should be a safe, secure environment that will inspire hope for a better future for the youth.

Also, there have been many reports of incidents where aboriginal women have been kidnapped and murdered. This is unacceptable and I believe that before more innocent women are slain we should step in and offer them better protection. There should be more police units on patrol in aboriginal communities.

Another pressing issue is random breathalyzer tests. Justice Minister Rob Nicholson first suggested this at a MADD meeting. Our current law has been only to administer the test if the driver has been suspected of being under the influence of alcohol. Australia currently has this law in place and their fatality rate for drunk driving has dropped by 36%. These tests benefit society because they help keep the roads safer for all. Drivers under the influence are a hazard on the road and are the cause of hundreds of deaths a year. However, we need to monitor those on the road to protect the safety of our citizens therefore random breathalyzer tests are beneficial because even those who are not driving hazardously may still be under the influence and still dangerous.

Lastly, though it may sound harsh we believe that euthanasia should be allowed to those who desperately need it. Patients going through a tremendous amount of pain under the right circumstances and permission of their doctor should be allowed to be euthanized. However, the patient in question must go through lots of evaluation both physical and emotional.
